At Vance

Crossing from AOR into power metal territory with ease At Vance should appeal to a wide audience. Followers of Kamelot and their ilk with love 'em, fans of Whitesnake... will probably be divided because of Azti's similarity to 'The Soldier Of Fortune'.

Germany's At Vance was formed by vocalist Oliver Hartmann (ex-Centers) and guitarist Olaf Lenk (ex-Velvet Viper) in 1998, and with such credentials on their resumes, they soon obtained a deal with Shark Records. Rainald Konig (guitar), Ulli Muller (keyboards), Jochen Schnur (bass) and Spoony (drums) rounded out the line-up that recorded 1999's No Escape debut -- a standard-issue product of melodic Germanic power metal if ever there was one. European fans lapped it up, and the group's second opus, 2000's Heart of Steel (featuring new drummer Jurgen Lucas) was a surprise hit in Japan and encouraged At Vance to quickly issue a follow-up in 2001's Dragonchaser. Barely pausing for breath, the next year saw the band switching to AFM Records, losing their bassist and keyboard player, releasing their fourth album Only Human, then hitting the road across Europe with Rhapsody and Angel Dust. A number of personnel changes ensued in 2003, as At Vance welcomed new vocalist Mats Leven and bassist {Sascha Feldmann} before recording their next L.P. The Evil in You.

At Vance Stickell’s induction into the Advertising Hall of Fame, Tom Johnson, former Publisher and Chief Executive Officer of the Los Angeles Times, shared some thoughts on his friend and colleague. “Vance was a Hall-of-Famer in every aspect of his life...he loved Betty Lee, his wife of 34 years...he loved his chosen profession of newspaper advertising...he was recognized and respected as a major civic leader in the Los Angeles community and he inspired excellence and commitment in virtually everyone that he met.”

The only remaining structure at Vance Junction is the remains of the Burnett and Clifton eight- pocket automatic coal chutes. The loading spur ran beyond the coal chute so that additional coal cars could be spotted above the chutes. When additional coal was needed in the chutes, a brakeman could release the brakes on the stored car and allow it to roll down into position to be unloaded. On the RGS, all coal cars were loaded and unloaded by men with shovels! Apparently manpower was cheaper than mechanical unloading devices or a few drop bottom gondolas.

A big new fancy Depot was planned for Vance Junction at one time. In fact the railroad had plans to change the name to Illium with the new Depot. But, Cinderella never got to the ball and the silver panic of 1893 put any new construction for the site on permanent hold.
