Asthma: Conditions
built 655 days ago
Asthma is one of the fastest growing medical problems in all developed countries. During the 1950s and 1060s, the medical community did not produce dependable documentation regarding the incidence rate of asthma. It was often felt that asthma was not a true medical condition but rather, the result of neurosis or even bad parenting. During the 1970s and 1980s, there was an flurry of research regarding asthma and significant gains were made in the understanding of asthma as a medical condition.
Asthma in America is one of the largest national surveys ever conducted about asthma in adults. Researchers interviewed 2,509 asthma sufferers, 512 doctors and 1,000 members of the general public on many aspects of the condition. Survey interviews were conducted by telephone from May 21 to July 7, 1998.
Asthma is a chronic but treatable condition. You can manage your condition much like someone manages diabetes or heart disease. You and your doctor can work together to control asthma, reduce the severity and frequency of attacks and help maintain a normal, active life.
