KALAMAZOO, Mich., March 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Data presented today at the 61st Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology provided the first quantitative data to show that allergies are on the rise. The study used the ImmunoCAP Specific IgE blood test which measures IgE levels or antibodies responsible for producing allergy symptoms. This study demonstrated that the level of specific IgE to dust mites in children was more than double and in some cases nearly triple the level observed in their parents.

Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways that may cause wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness and coughing. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 30 million Americans reported having a history of asthma in 2003, including nine million children. About 20 million said they currently had asthma. In 2000, the CDC reported that there were more than 10 million asthma-related outpatient visits to private physician offices and hospital clinics. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have estimated asthma-related healthcare costs in the U.S. at $14 billion annually.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions in the United States, affecting roughly 20 million Americans. Though asthma can develop at any age, it is most common in children. Some studies suggest that asthma affects 7-10% of all children. Asthma can ... develop during adolescence and adulthood. Some children have even been known to “outgrow” asthma, although when this happens, it is not uncommon for the asthma to reappear later in life.

Asthma attacks come and go, with wide variation in the symptoms at different times. Many people with asthma have problems only occasionally but others struggle with it every day. Modern medicines control and relieve symptoms and so attacks may only last a few hours or minutes, but without treatment this may go on for several days. Some children grow out of asthma and some people are only affected at different times of the year. However, the period of time during which people may have asthma attacks can last for many years or throughout life.
