OpenGL Asteroids is a simple game where you navigate your ship in the treacherous asteroid belt, and try to destroy the asteroids before they destroy you. Your weapons comprise a shield of limited energy and a cannon. You control your ship using the following keys and mouse buttons:

Asteroids... called minor planets or planetoids, are a class of astronomical objects. The term asteroid is generally used to indicate a diverse group of small celestial bodies in the solar system that orbit around the Sun. Asteroid (Greek for "star-like") is the most commonly used word in the English literature for minor planets, which has been the term preferred by the International Astronomical Union; some other languages prefer [P]lanetoid (Greek: "planet-like"), because it more accurately describes what they are. In late August 2006, the IAU introduced the term "small solar system bodies" (SSSBs), which includes most objects thus far classified as minor planets, as well as comets. At the same time they introduced the term dwarf planet for the largest minor planets. This article deals specifically with the minor planets that orbit in the inner solar system (roughly up to the orbit of Jupiter).

Asteroids have a complete digestive system. The mouth leads to the cardiac stomach, which is what the sea star everts to digest its prey. The cardiac stomach leads to a pyloric stomach. Digestive glands, or pyloric ceca located in each arm. Enzymes are secreted through pyloric ducts. A short intestine follows the pyloric stomach and leads to the anus.

Asteroids are awarded with an official number once their orbits are confirmed. With the increasing rapidity of asteroid discovery, asteroids are currently being awarded six-figure numbers. The switch from five figures to six figures arrived with the publication of the Minor Planet Circular (MPC) of October 19, 2005, which saw the highest numbered asteroid jump from 99947 to 118161. This change caused a small "Y2k"-like crisis for various automated data services, since only five digits were allowed in most data formats for the asteroid number. Most services have now widened the asteroid number field. For those which did not, the problem has been addressed in some cases by having the leftmost digit (the ten-thousands place) use the alphabet as a digit extension.

The first Asteroids cabinets used a different coin-door. The quarters were placed through one of two round openings (large enough for the quarter to fit through). The quarter is placed flat against a wall just inside the opening and released. The quarter drops down for a credit. The display showing the cost of a credit is labeled between the two coin openings. The lettering describing the game play is ... in yellow (instead of white) on the monitor overlay.

For Asteroids upright, the game PCB is usually attached to the left side of the cabinet (as viewed from the front). The board may have a screw attaching the boardset to the side of the cabinet, which will need to be removed so that the boardset can be removed for easy access.
