Asteroids Deluxe Arcade Machine GREAT SHAPE! LOOK! This Asteroids Deluxe is great condition. The vector graphics are still nice and bright. The bezel, marquis and control panel are all original and in fabulous condition for their age. The side art is still in tact on both sides and is ... all original. All the buttons function perfectly. Everything works 100%.

In Asteroids Deluxe, the power of hyperspace is gone, replaced by a shield that protects you from asteroids and alien crafts, but the number of hits it can take is finite. Your ship still has the thrust capability, which can get you out of danger in a bind. Like its predecessor, the playing field in Asteroids Deluxe is swarming with asteroids. The large ones break into two medium-sized asteroids, and the medium ones break into two smaller ones. The smaller the rock, the faster it travels.

Asteroids Deluxe features modified gameplay intentionally designed to challenge players who had mastered the original Asteroids. Hyperspace was replaced with a new option called "shields", which creates a protective barrier around the players' ship. This barrier is only effective when the button is depressed and held (unlike hyperspace), and depletes with use (... unlike hyperspace). The players' ship was redesigned to include two side fins and a narrower body, keeping the overall ship dimensions identical to the original game. The ship has the same maximum velocity as in Asteroids, but can accelerate twice as fast. Firing is automatic, holding down the fire button will release a maximum of four shots (on screen) at a time.

The graphics in Asteroids Deluxe are slightly improved with a few more lines drawn on the ship and the asteroids themselves to give the game a quasi-three-dimensional feel, with a hint of texture that wasn't present in the original. The addition of the ominous space cube really pushes that point home. Sure, the action is still two-dimensional, but you can tell that this game wanted to be 3D. Some additional visual upgrades include the longer destruction sequence for your ship, the appearance of the shield, and the more detailed disintegration of the smallest asteroids.

The artwork for Asteroids Deluxe is fairly bright, even under the original cabinet lighting. The reason it didn't matter much in the arcades is that true vector monitors are much more intense than anything your computer monitor can simulate. Fortunately, the .art files can be used to decrease the brightness of the artwork, otherwise you'd have difficulty seeing the vectors. A simulation of this is shown below.
asteroidsdeluxe.jpg Atari sends word that Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe will be available as a joint download on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday. The games have players controlling a spaceship in an asteroid field and shooting to destroy asteroids and saucers, all the while trying to avoid collision.
