Asteroids: Games
built 178 days ago
If the nomenclature of 1980, Asteroids Deluxe may well have been "Asteroids 1.1." The differences between this game and its predecessor are so minimal that it was really unfair for Atari to call it a "deluxe" version of its 1979 smash hit. Still, Asteroids was a video game phenomenon in those days, and the marketing folks were probably just trying to cash in on a craze.

The Asteroids arcade machine is a vector game. This means that the game graphics are composed entirely of lines which are drawn on a vector monitor. The hardware consists primarily of a standard MOS 6502 CPU, which executes the game program, and the Digital Vector Generator (DVG), vector processing circuitry developed by Atari themselves. As the 6502 by itself was too slow to control both the game play and the vector hardware at the same time, the latter task was delegated to the DVG.
AST HS KIT Before installing this kit, make sure your Asteroids game is fully functional. This kit can only work in a fully functional game. This is ... a good time to check to see what revision of asteroids the game is (Rev1 or Rev2). How to check revision level. This kit is only compatible with Rev2 vector roms. If you game is Rev1 you will need to install a replacement Rev2 vector rom (provided).

Atari 2600 Front Cover The original Coin-Op game of Asteroids in the arcade machines contained 4 kilobytes of code and 4 kilobytes of graphic data. Programmers managed to squeeze it in to 1 kilobyte of data for the Atari 2600!

Intimately knowing the coin-op video game Asteroids really depends on from which generation that you hail. The easiest way to figure out where you really stand here is to peek inside the closet; if you have bellbottoms floating around from the 70’s in there, or that rubber thingy that slipped over a 2600 controller, then odds are you are quite familiar with Atari’s monochromatic pebble blaster. But if Nintendo rolls off of your tongue easier than Intellivision, then surely you’ll need a little schooling. Old schooling that is.
