Ask Jeeves Search Engine: Ask.Com
built 620 days ago
The BBC is running a story today which says that Ask Jeeves is planning to drop the Jeeves character this month (probably at Search Engine Strategies New York) and rebrand as Ask.com. After IAC acquired Ask Jeeves last year, the decision to Axe Jeeves was made soon afterward.
Ask.com puts Jeeves out to pasture, sets eyes on Google. Jeeves, the mascot and butler for the Ask Jeeves search engine, has long been heralded as one of the internet’s most popular icons. However, Ask.com has fired its Mascot and re-launched its website with a slim new look.
With the change, Ask Jeeves will display a “Web Answer” to many of the requests its search engine processes. For instance, if someone enters “world’s largest lake” into Ask.com’s search box, the top result will include a snippet listing the Caspian Sea, including its size and location.
Search engine Ask Jeeves has announced that they will be teaming up with the Red Cross to provide much needed relief funds to victims of the recent hurricanes. To assist with the relief effort, Ask has launched redcross.ask.com with ideas of donating funds gained from search queries

The Economist: Power at Last Ask.com was originally known as Ask Jeeves, where "Jeeves" is the name of the "gentleman's personal gentleman", or valet (illustrated by Marcos Sorenson), fetching answers to any question asked. The character was based on Jeeves, Bertie Wooster̢۪s fictional valet from the works of P.G. Wodehouse.
