Ashton Kutcher

Like a flash from the flatlands of Iowa, farmhand turned model turned actor Ashton Kutcher is racing toward star status in Hollywood. It all happened as if by magic. After placing first in 1997's Fresh Face of Iowa modeling contest, agents flew him to New York. The very next day he was working the runway in Bryant Park. During his first trip to Milan, he booked 19 shows. One year later, on his first day in Los Angeles, he was cast in the Fox sitcom That '70s Show, which went on to become a Nielsen smash.

Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1978, Ashton Kutcher is a genuine rags-to-riches Hollywood success story. The goofy actor was raised on a farm in rural Homestead, Iowa, and attended Clear Creek-Amana High School, where he participated in soccer, wrestling, and drama. Kutcher cleaned floors at a General Mills plant during high school, and once was so broke that he sold his own blood. Though he was more interested in acting and modeling, Kutcher attended University of Iowa, studying biochemical engineering. He left quickly... and found some success as a model after winning a state-wide competition. Then, in a lucky turn of fate Kutcher was discovered in a bar in Iowa City and cast in the pilot for “That ‘70s Show”, which led to stardom for him and co-star Topher Grace.

Discovered in a restaurant in Iowa City, Ashton Kutcher was encouraged to enter a modeling contest that won him a trip to New York, a move that would jump-start his career. Upon his arrival in the big city, the tall (6'3"), dark-haired Kutcher was signed to an agency and modeled in runway shows in Milan and Paris and was featured in advertisements for Calvin Klein Jeans. Acting inevitably beckoned, and he made his film debut in "Distance", an NYU student production, and appeared in a nationwide Pizza Hut TV commercial. Just a year after arriving in NYC from the tiny farm community of Homestead, Iowa, the young actor could be seen as a regular on Fox's "That '70s Show" (1998-), a role he landed after impressing producers with his fresh-faced enthusiasm. Far from his lovable but dopey character of Michael Kelso, Kutcher studied biochemical engineering at the University of Iowa, working as a cereal dust sweeper in the General Mills factory in Cedar Rapids to finance his education. He made the move to the big screen with a small role in "Coming Soon" (1999), starring Gaby Hoffman and Mia Farrow, followed by a turn in the its-so-stupid-its fun comedy "Dude, Where's My Car" (2000), opposite Sean William Scott, a film that has gone on the enjoy something of a cult following.

Pretty Brittany Murphy and prettier Ashton Kutcher make a surprisingly enjoyable comic team in Just Married, a romantic comedy about a horrible honeymoon. After a whirlwind romance, radio traffic announcer Kutcher and rich girl Murphy get married over the objections of her upper-crust family. Their love can overcome snobbery--but as the cuddly pair start to drive each other nuts over mishaps travelling through Europe, it starts to look like their love can't overcome intimacy. Just Married has a sprightly script that keeps one foot on the ground (unlike some recent romantic comedies that seem to have no connection to reality) and one eye on the small ways in which lovers can get on each other's nerves. Kutcher and Murphy have a sweet yet volatile chemistry that keeps the antics lively. --Bret Fetzer
