ASHANTI (LATIN JAZZ): Dyos Bo'otik Even though several members of Ashanti are career musicians, the band is clearly a hobby for its members who generally play together only on weekends. Kobberdahl teaches in the West Des Moines school district and was recently named director of jazz studies at Valley High School, a post vacated by Long who just accepted a new assignment directing the jazz program at Missouri Western State College. Fishler, who teaches at Southwestern Community College, and Boyle ... maintain music teaching studios.

New York native Ashanti exploded onto the R&B/hip-hop scene as a sultry supporting vocalist on several big singles but soon made a name for herself as a solo artist. Before the release of her debut album, she sang on Ja Rule's "Always on Time," Fat Joe's "What's Luv?" (both of which hit the No. 1 in 2002) and Big Pun's "How We Roll." Her self-titled debut album — produced by Irv Gotti for his label, The Inc. — debuted at No. 1 on the charts. The first single off the album, "Foolish," joined her duets at the top of the charts, giving her three Top 10 singles at once. Ashanti wasted no time releasing her second chart-topping album, Chapter II (2003), which yielded another mega-hit, "Rock Wit U (Aww Baby)."

Ashanti Ashanti's overnight jump to superstardom followed that of Ja Rule, a similar urban music sensation helmed by Gotti. The New York producer took notice of Ashanti initially because of her beauty, dancing, and acting. She trained as a dancer at the Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Center, learning a number of dance styles. She danced most notably in Disney's Polly, which starred Phylicia Rashad, and ... appeared in a number of big-name music videos, in addition to other dance work. As an actress, she made a name for herself with roles in Spike Lee's Malcolm X and Who's da Man before that. The multi-talented vocalist was causing quite a stir, and Gotti did what he could to bring her into his Murder Inc. fold.

Historically, an Ashanti girl was betrhothed, if not in childhood, immediately after the puberty ceremony. They did not regard marriage as an important ritual event, but as a state that follows soon and normally after the puberty ritual. The Ashanti require a bride price - various goods given by the boy's family to that of the girl.A man marries a cross cousin -- his father's sister's daughter or his mother's brother's daughter. Parallel cousins are members of the same 'abusua (family) and hence prohibited as marriage partners. Sometimes nuptial arrangements were arranged before the birth of the couple. Parents allowed boys some initiative, but he must receive the consent of the households, the only formalities required.
Ashanti was largely rebuilt by the 1945 (although it stayed rather poor) and the political opponents were either killed or forced to emmigrate. Azikiwe became the sole and uncontested ruler of whole country; most of Ashanti's towns and cities had his statues, a similar stellae to that in Addis Abeba was built in the Azikiwe City as the symbol of the empire. The construction of new Imperial Palace, which was to be one of the largest buildings in the world, started in 1944, but was never completed. Azikiwe had many fanatical supporters and those who opposed him did not dare to speak loudly; military and the secret services did their job.
