Music is a key element in Indian cinema, and for 50 years Asha Bhosle has sung the songs that actresses mime to. The range and vitality of her output is extraordinary. Manteca’s admittedly brief selection (Bhosle is thought to have recorded about 5,000 songs) covers the 1960s and 70s, starting with the soaring seduction of In Aankhon Ki Masti before moving, in glorious mono, through passages of flamenco, Shadows-style guitar, exploding tabla, sitar, 60s pop, Western orchestrals and studio tricksiness. The music shimmers with the borrowed finery, kitsch and Indian roots, with Bhosle’s cajoling voice in full command

In Britain Bhosle is best known for the namecheck on Cornshop’s Brimful of Asha but in India she is a superstar. Now 67, she’s been the queen of the Bollywood ‘playback’ singers for more than 50 years. During that time she has recorded an estimated 12,000 songs. It remains hard to find her recordings outside the Asian community, making this 14-track compilation particularly welcome. On it her soaring voice is blended with traditional Indian elements and Western pop influences to delightful effect.

Asha has ... worked with many other composers like Naushad, Madan Mohan, Shankar-Jaikishan, and Salil Chaudhary among others. Shankar Jaikishan worked very little with Asha. However, the team produced quite a few hits including the seductive Parde mein rehne do ( Shikar, 1968). Asha got her second Filmfare Award for the song. Asha also sang the song Zindagi ek safar hai suhaana ( Andaz) for Shankar Jaikishan, in which she tried to yodel like Kishore Kumar, whose version of the song is more better known. When Raj Kapoor was not on speaking terms with Lata Mangeshkar, Asha got to sing the songs of Mera Naam Joker (1970), composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. Madan Mohan also recorded few songs with Asha, including the popular folk number Jhumka gira re from Mera Saaya(1966).
