Known popularly as the ‘Barbra Streisand of India’, Asha Bhosle is widely considered to be the world’s most recorded artist. Asha’s late husband, composer R.D. Burman, revolutionised the sound of the movies produced at Mumbai’s fables studios, known as Bollywood.
Legendary Bollywood singing sensation Asha Bhosle - "The most recorded voice on the planet" with over 12,500 titles to her name - makes a rare leap from the film screen to an intimate concert at the Broward Center. During a six-decade career she has sung in over 950 Bollywood movies, performed in 18 languages, won seven Filmfare Awards in India, and twice received the National Award for her ghazals. Asha Bhosle is an unparalleled icon in India. A tireless collaborator with artists of all styles, she entered the mainstream pop arena singing with dance music producers, bhangra groups, and Western artists like Mike Stipe, Kronos Quartet, Boy George and many others. From Asia to Carnegie Hall, and now the Broward Center, Asha Bhosle captivates audiences everywhere.
In 1995, a 62-year old Asha Bhosle did playback for young actress Urmila Matondkar in the movie Rangeela. She pleasantly surprised her fans with superhit songs like Tanha Tanha and Rangeela Re. The songs were composed by iconoclastic music director A. R. Rahman, who went on to record many more songs with her. Particularly notable was Asha Bhosle's first song with A R Rahman, Tanha Tanha, an oomph-oozing number.
Asha began her segment, sharing memories of her life. The excerpts were set to the sultry number, Mera Naam Hai Shabnam from the hit film Kati Patang. Asha Bhosle’s voice cut through the darkness as the lights honed in on her and two dancers with sinewy moves escorted her onstage. She continued crooning her life’s story and how her faith in God pulled her through the tough times and the obstacles she faced in life.
In the mid-1980s, Asha sang with Boy George (Bow down mister) and Stephen Lauscombe. In 1997, she sang a love song with the boy band Code Red, at the age of 64. She ... recorded the song The Way you Dream (One Giant Leap, [1]) with Michael Stipe that was used in the English movie, Bulletproof Monk.
Asha was born in September 1933 in Sangali, Maharashtra, into what proved to be one of the century's most influential and successful musical dynasties. After her father's unexpected death in 1942, the family moved from Pune to Kolhapur, before settling in Bombay in 1944, the booming center of the wartime Hindi-language film industry.
