Ash in training. Ash, being the main character, was the role model for millions of kids. He danced around the screen, controlled by Misty, and later Max, and later Dawn. He engaged in Pokemon Battles, winning even though he called the wrong moves while everyone groaned at his stupidity. But his Pikachu, struck by God's Lighting, is so powerful it wins anyways.
Ash has always dreamed of becoming a Pokémon Master and as soon as he hit the age of 10 he rushed to Professor Oak's Laboratory to get his first Pokémon. Originally wanting to choose Squirtle, Ash ended up getting the Pokémon Pikachu and left on his journey. Starting off as a completely unskilled trainer, Ash managed to go through, with the assistance of his friends Misty & Brock and capture new Pokémon and defeat the gyms in Kanto, allowing him to enter in the Pokémon League. Since then he has continued to travel, make new friends and capture new Pokémon while still following his goal of becoming a Pokémon Master. Since this goal is so close to his heart, he sometimes acts a bit rash and rushes to the next battle he can as fast as possible.

Ash has changed a great deal over the course of the series, particularly in regards to his skill at Pokémon training, but his earnestness and determination have remained. Never straying from his goal, he has remained loyal to his friends, his family, and his supporters, but most of all his Pokémon. Ash became a great Trainer by learning to find and use the inner strength of each of his Pokémon by bonding with them and learning where their hidden abilities lie, as well as resorting to unorthodox strategies when fighting particularly challenging opponents. For example, he uses his Pikachu's speed to outmaneuver larger foes and attack, and defeated Gary's Blastoise with his Charizard by causing the field to overheat and have Charizard mount a close-range attack while Blastoise was blinded by the steam.
After rejoining Ash's team as a Phanpy, it evolved to help free Pikachu from Team Rocket. However even after the evolution it kept its playful personality from being a Phanpy which sometimes can cause mayhem with other younger Pokémon. Since evolving it has become a powerhouse in Ash's team winning several Frontier Battles. It now resides back in Oak's Lab during Ash's journey to Sinnoh

Out of all five regions that Ash visited, Kanto and Hoenn are the only ones that Ash started out with just Pikachu. He did try to go to Sinnoh with Pikachu alone but Aipom followed him. At the beginning of each, Pikachu was ... in some way, injured, and ended up destroying the bike of a girl who would later travel with Ash.
Ash walks in on Brock with a truck driver. I'm scarred too. Ash very rarely catches Pokemon. When he does, he lets it go at one point or another. Thus, his party is always changing in number, although he never has more than 10 Pokemon at one time. This may be because he is a pedafile/Pokesexual and only wishes to have sex with Pokemon he has just caught. The one exception to this is Pikachu, who is seen in Ash's sleeping bag in every sleeping scene in the show.
