Asacol: Ulcerative Colitis

Asacol belongs to a group of medications called aminosalicylates. It is thought that Asacol works by inhibiting the production of inflammatory chemicals in the lining of the colon. Asacol decreases the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, chemicals that lead to the inflammation of ulcerative colitis.

Asacol enemas (1g/100ml, 2g/50ml or 4g/100ml) are inserted via the rectum and act on the left side of the colon. They are therefore recommended for: ยท the induction and maintenance of remission in proctitis, proctosigmoiditis and left-sided colitis.

Asacol is proven to treat mild to moderate flare-ups of ulcerative colitis. In a six-week clinical study of flare-ups, Asacol was evaluated for its ability to reduce ulcerative colitis symptoms, including rectal bleeding, number of bowel movements, and abdominal pain. After three weeks of therapy, rectal bleeding and number of bowel movements were reduced.
