Asacol: Studies
built 607 days ago
Ipocol® (Lagap pharmaceuticals) is a recently launched brand of enteric-coated mesalazine, similar to Asacol® (Proctor & Gamble). Both products are coated with Eudragit-S, a methacrylate copolymer, which provides protection during passage through the first part of the gastrointestinal tract. Proctor and Gamble have written to GPs and PCT pharmacists with the details of dissolution studies they have carried out comparing Ipocol with Asacol (see details below).

One interesting study looked at the effect of Asacol on male infertility. Sulfasalazine (a similar medication for ulcerative colitis) often causes male infertility. In this small study, men who developed infertility while taking sulfasalazine were switched to Asacol. All men showed improved sperm count, and eight out of nine men showed improved sperm motility.

Lagap (who distribute Ipocol) carried out a 24-hour urinary excretion study comparing Ipocol with Asacol. Healthy adults (n=24; 23 completed the trial) took either Asacol or Ipocol for 7 days at a dose of 2400mg/day in a randomised crossover trial. Mean percentage of the dose administered that appeared in the urine was calculated for each of the preparations. These were found to be within 20% of each other. More details of this study are not available and the company say there are no plans to publish it.
