MESALAMINE (Asacol®, Pentasa®) is an antiinflammatory agent. It reduces inflammation inside the bowel and pain associated with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Generic mesalamine delayed-release (enteric-coated) tablets and capsules are not yet available.

Other commonly used names of Asacol are: Pentasa, Mesasal, Salofalk, Mesalazine, Sulfasalazine, 5-aminosalicylic acid & 5-ASA. Asacol tablets can not be split and must be taken in full, swallowed with a glass of water.

Asacol suppositories and foam enema and Asacol MR tablets all contain the active ingredient mesalazine, which is a type of medicine called an aminosalicylate. It is used to reduce inflammation in the intestines in a condition called ulcerative colitis.

The Asacol 400 mg tablet used in the 2.4 g/day arm of the study was approved in Canada in 1985. The Asacol 400 mg tablet is currently indicated for the treatment of mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis and for the maintenance of remission of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. Asacol 800 is indicated for the treatment of moderately active ulcerative colitis. The recommended daily adult dose is six tablets, taken orally, in divided doses. Interchangeability between Asacol 800 (800 mg tablet) and Asacol (400 mg tablet) has not been established.
