In 1789 Governor Arthur Phillip sent Dawes with a small party to reach the Western mountains. They crossed the Nepean (later discoveries proved the Nepean to be an extension of the Hawkesbury) at Emu Ford, and keeping Round Hill (now Mount Hay) in view and ascending and descending the gullies they pushed their way through the areas we now know as Mt Riverview, Warrimoo and Valley Heights and reached Springwood on the Bee Farm Road ridge. They came to within nine kilometres of Mount Hay before they had to turn back with provisions running low.

Arthur Phillip entered into his first marriage to a widow, Margaret Denison on the 19th. of July 1763, little is written about this union, but it seems to have finished about 1774.

The fire was reported to be extinguished by 2340 and the Arthur Phillip resumed course for Botany Bay. No person was killed or injured, though some affect of smoke inhalation was reported by certain members of the crew. The fire resulted in significant damage to the crew recreation room/bar.

Both Caltex Tanker Co and the master of the Arthur Phillip were charged with illegally discharging oil and an oily mixture in contravention of the Act. In addition, the master was charged with failing to report the spill and failing to make appropriate entries in the vessel's oil record book.
