Governor Arthur Phillip was under orders from King George III to interact with the local people and develop a positive relationship with them. However, the Aboriginal people kept their distance from these strangers who had come to their land. So Governor Phillip ordered some marines to kidnap Bennelong and another Aborigine, Colbee, in November 1789 as a way for Phillip to learn about the local Aboriginal people. Bennelong and Colbee were lured to the marine's boat by the offer of fish. Colbee escaped after only two weeks, but Bennelong stayed on a little longer. Colbee’s convict guard received 100 lashes as punishment for neglecting his duty.
