Arthur Evans: King Minos
built 615 days ago
Flamboyant, arrogant, short sighted and only 5'2", Arthur Evans is one of the most well-known archeologists in history. He believed that the legendary kingdom of King Minos was real and he used the clues in the myths and legends to find it. The Minoan civilization of Crete lay waiting to be discovered. In 1900 he unearthed what he called the Palace of Minos (now called the Palace of Knossos), and reconstructed this amazing culture.

On Friday 23 March 1900 at 11 a.m. Arthur Evans began his excavation of Knossos. Although he was not the first to excavate at the site, that honour belongs to a Greek appropriately called Minos Kalokairinos in 1878, it was to be Evans who uncovered the Knossos Palace and brought to light a hitherto unknown civilisation -- possibly the oldest in Europe. The basic excavation of the site took four years and for the rest of his life Evans continued working on the site, reconstructing and building, often in an attempt to preserve the remains from the weather to which they had been exposed for the first time in 3,500 years.

SACRAMENTO--United States Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced today that a federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment charging DAVID ARTHUR EVANS, 58, of Montague, California, with possessing child pornography. The indictment alleges that on June 30, 2005 EVANS knowingly possessed images depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct on his computer. In a second count, the government seeks the forfeiture of the computer EVANS used to maintain his collection of child pornography.
