A new fact revealed in a recent poll is that more than half of arthritis sufferers in the United States have reduced or stopped their medications after being alerted to these safety concerns. But, stopping medication is not a viable option for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) sufferers with persistent and debilitating pain, according to Dr. Simon Pedder, president and CEO of Chelsea Therapeutics.

An estimated 40 million people in the United States have arthritis or other rheumatic conditions. By the year 2020, this number is expected to reach 59 million. Rheumatic diseases are the leading cause of disability among adults age 65 and older.

The number of people affected by arthritis is going up, and the number will continue to climb dramatically as the baby boomer generation ages. Recent statistics on arthritis prevalence reveal more than 21 percent of American adults (over 1 in 5 people) report being diagnosed by a doctor with arthritis or other rheumatic conditions.

"We know that arthritis can result in people having to leave their jobs. This research focuses our attention on the workplace itself and highlights how common a wide range of work transitions are in the lives of people with arthritis," Monique A.M. Gignac, senior scientist at the Toronto Western Research Institute and associate professor in the department of health sciences at the University of Toronto, said in a prepared statement.
