Arthritis: Studies
built 478 days ago
Glucosamine is very promising for relief of arthritis pain and is backed by numerous double-blind, placebo-controlled studies. In these studies, glucosamine has been shown to rehabilitate cartilage and reduce the progression of osteoarthritis, and significantly lessen pain from arthritis.
Based on data from previous studies, the use of externally applied NSAIDs -- a group of anti-inflammatory drugs that includes ibuprofen and ketoprofen -- don't help patients with arthritis over the long term. After 2 weeks, these so-called topical NSAIDs are no better than inactive "placebo" lotions.

The study tracked 490 people with osteoarthritis (OA) and inflammatory arthritis (IA) for more than four years. During that time, 63 percent of the participants remained employed, but work changes were common: 45 percent reduced their work hours due to arthritis; 52 percent switched their type of work; 18 percent weren't able to seek and accept promotions and job transfers; and 41 percent weren't able to take on additional responsibilities.
