There are many different forms of arthritis, each of which has a different cause. Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis are autoimmune diseases in which the body is attacking itself. Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection. Gouty arthritis is caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint that results in subsequent inflammation. Additionally, there is a less common form of gout that is caused by the formation of rhomboidal shaped crystals of calcium pyrophosphate. This form of gout is known as pseudogout.

Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are chronic, inflammatory diseases that result from faulty signals in the immune system. The symptoms of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis can significantly impact quality of life. People diagnosed with psoriatic disease may exhibit strong feelings of anger, helplessness, self-consciousness and embarrassment because of the appearance of their skin and the pain and discomfort they often endure. While there are treatment options available to help improve the symptoms of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, there is no cure, and many people still struggle to find a treatment that can lead to significant levels of skin clearance and decrease their pain.

On October 24, 2002, Amgen announced that it has submitted a supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) to the FDA requesting an additional indication for Enbrel "to inhibit the progression of structural damage in psoriatic arthritis patients". The request for the expanded indication is based on results of a 12-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The FDA approved Enbrel "to reduce the signs and symptoms of active arthritis in patients with psoriatic arthritis" in January, 2002.

More than 100 volunteers with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis are participating in the National Psoriasis Foundation's third annual Capitol Hill Day. Capitol Hill Day is an annually organized advocacy effort that motivates people living with psoriasis and/or psoriatic arthritis to speak out about their conditions. Patient volunteers from the National Psoriasis Foundation will convene at the offices of congressional leaders to tell their personal stories of living with psoriatic disease and to shed light on the life- altering impact of these conditions.

Psoriatic arthritis is a rheumatoid-like arthritic condition characterized by pain and swelling (inflammation) of the joints (arthritis) that occurs in association with gray discoloration or scaly plaques of the skin (psoriasis). Abnormalities of the nails may ... be present. In many cases, skin symptoms precede the development of arthritis by several years. The exact cause of the psoriatic arthritis is unknown.

In Humira clinical trials for ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn's disease and plaque psoriasis, the safety profile for adult patients treated with Humira was similar to the safety profile seen in adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis. In the placebo-controlled clinical trials in plaque psoriasis, the incidence of arthralgia was 3 percent in Humira-treated patients versus 1 percent in controls.
