Arthritis is any pain that occurs in a joint. The two main forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Others include juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, Reiter's syndrome, gout and pseudogout. Treatment focuses on alleviating pain, preventing further degeneration and maintaining or improving joint mobility.
Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis: The Expanding Biologics Landscape is based on a U.S. survey of 50 dermatologists, 51 rheumatologists and 20 managed care pharmacy directors. Their responses were compared to assess similarities and differences of opinion regarding clinical and economic, factors in the management of psoriasis and Psoriatic arthritis with biologic therapies.
Psoriatic Arthritis occurs in some patients with psoriasis, a common scaling skin disorder. Psoriatic Arthritis often affects the joints at the ends of the fingers and causes changes in the fingernails and toenails.

The report, Comparative Effectiveness of Drug Therapy for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis in Adults, was authored by the AHRQ-funded RTI International-University of North Carolina Evidence-based Practice Center in Chapel Hill, NC. It is the newest analysis from AHRQ's Effective Health Care Program. That program represents an important federal effort to compare alternative treatments for significant health conditions and make the findings public. The program is intended to help patients, doctors, nurses and others choose the most effective treatments. Information on the program, including full reports and plain-language summary guides, can be found at http://www.effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov.

Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic inflammatory arthropathy manifesting with joint pain and swelling that can lead to joint destruction and debilitation. It is frequently associated with inflamed, scaly, red patches of skin psoriasis and psoriasis nail involvement. Symptoms may include stiffness and tenderness of the joints and surrounding tissue and reduced range of motion. Joints of the hands, wrists, knees, ankles, feet, lower back and neck are commonly affected. Psoriasis affects an estimated two to three percent of the world's population, and approximately one out of three patients affected by psoriasis may develop psoriatic arthritis. Both men and women are equally affected by psoriatic arthritis, most commonly between the ages 30 and 50, in the peak of their productive years.

There are different forms of arthritis; each has a different cause. The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease) is a result of trauma to the joint, infection of the joint, or age. Emerging evidence suggests that abnormal anatomy might contribute to the early development of osteoarthritis. Other arthritis forms are rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, autoimmune diseases in which the body attacks itself. Septic arthritis is caused by joint infection. Gouty arthritis is caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joint, causing inflammation.
