Rheumatoid arthritis attacks the interior of the articulation and is an autoimmune disease. The substance used by the body to fight infection damages its own tissues, generating redness, inflammations, rigidity and deformity. The disease appears in adulthood and damages the articulations of the hands, feet and arms.
The pain of arthritis may come from different sources including inflammation of the tendons, the ligaments or the tissue that lines the joints. Muscle strain and fatigue ... are factors. The pain of arthritis varies greatly from person to person. Acute pain is temporary, but chronic pain can last a lifetime.

The cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown. Some scientists feel that it may result from an infection, but there is no evidence that it is contagious. For whatever reason, the joint lining becomes very inflamed and thickened, slowly destroying cartilage and bone.
