KENILWORTH, N.J., June 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Schering-Plough Corporation (NYSE: SGP) today announced that the European Commission has granted approval of REMICADE(R) (infliximab) in the European Union (EU) as first-line therapy for the treatment of early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). REMICADE, in combination with methotrexate, is indicated for the reduction of signs and symptoms, as well as the improvement in physical function in patients with severe, active and progressive disease not previously treated with methotrexate or other disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS). The approval follows a positive opinion granted in April by the EU's Committee for Proprietary Medicinal Products (CPMP), newly renamed the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), for the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products (EMEA).

CARLSBAD, Calif., March 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., (Nasdaq: ISIS) announced today it has initiated a Phase II clinical trial of ISIS 104838, an antisense inhibitor of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The Phase II clinical trial will evaluate the safety and efficacy of ISIS 104838 in RA when administered by subcutaneous injection (SQ) for three months. This is the second Phase II study of ISIS 104838 in RA currently in progress. TNF-alpha is a naturally occurring cytokine that is involved in the development and progression of many inflammatory diseases, including RA.
