Researchers at Cincinnati Children's have issued the first study showing that a protein normally involved in blood clotting (fibrin)... plays an important role in the inflammatory response and development of rheumatoid arthritis. Inflammatory joint disease appears to be driven by the engagement of inflammatory cells with fibrin matrices through a specific integrin receptor, aMB2. Writing in the November issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers suggest that therapies designed to interrupt the localized interaction of inflammatory cells and fibrin may help arthritis patients.

Shallaki ... known as boswellia (Boswellia serrata): In clinical trials, promising results were observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, chronic colitis, Crohn's disease. Researchers found that standardized Boswellia extract significantly reduced swelling and pain and usually reduced morning stiffness for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Also known as boswella, this herb is native to India, used for centuries by Ayurvedic physicians in arthritis herbal remedies. It has well proven anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects through the inhibition of inflammatory-causing substances, speeding up of cartilage formation, and improved blood supply to the joints. The researchers randomly assigned 152 people to hydrotherapy, the special ‘Tai Chi for Arthritis’ (Dr Paul Lam) program, or a waiting group. Classes lasted an hour and were offered twice a week. After 12 weeks, there were significant improvements on scores measuring pain and physical function in both groups. Both groups ... showed improvements in physical performance scores, but these improvements were only significant from a statistical standpoint in the hydrotherapy group.

Methotrexate and other DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs) reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in rheumatoid arthritis patients. According to a study published March 6, 2008 in Arthritis Research & Therapy, an international team of researchers analyzed data from the QUEST-RA study (Quantitative Patient Questionnaires in Standard Monitoring of Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis). There were 4,363 patients from 15 countries involved in the study which examined the causes and effects of rheumatoid arthritis, as well as the potential benefit of medications.

Modern scientific research has ... revealed the mechanisms which provide relief for arthritis patients. Studies show that acupuncture can stimulate the production of endorphins (natural pain-killing hormones in the brain), and the anti-inflammatory hormone adrenalcorticotropin. Somehow, the acupuncture needles trigger the body to heal itself by producing hormones that reduce pain and inflammation. Acupuncture can then be used on an ongoing basis to prevent re-occurrence of arthritis once it has been successfully cured.
