Artemisia Gentileschi
built 643 days ago
Artemisia Gentileschi was one of the most important painters of the post-Renaissance era. Although she has been grouped with "followers of Caravaggio," in some sense she followed no one. Although many women were allowed to assist in the studios of famous men--often their fathers or husbands--it was not so easy for them to become a known artist themselves. Gentileschi was the only woman of that time to consistently and successfully tackle religious and historical scenarios on canvas, rather than the less valued landscape and portrait painting, genres more acceptable for women artists. She was highly original in her interpretation and treatment of what were then common themes.

Artemisia Gentileschi (July 8 1593 รข€“ c.1653) was an Italian Early Baroque painter, today considered one of the most accomplished painters in the generation influenced by Caravaggio (Caravaggisti). In an era when women painters were not easily accepted by the artistic community, she was the first female painter to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence. She was ... one of the first female artists to paint historical and religious paintings, at a time when such heroic themes were considered beyond a woman's reach.

Born in a time when men ruled the art world, Artemisia Gentileschi ... became one of the first women painters. The movie depicts Artemisia defying conventional rules of propriety. She draws nude pictures of herself that her Mother Superior disapproves of and leaves that convent so she can pursue artistic studies. She also tries to join the Art Academy, but they reject her because of her gender.
The necessity of both natural-born talent and societal influences in shaping an artist rings true in the life of Artemisia Gentileschi, she adds. In the early 17th century, women were not allowed to attend all-male art academies and could only become artists if they learned fundamental skills privately, usually from a relative or through lessons.

Artemisia Gentileschi is today considered the most important woman artist of the pre-modern era, and a major artist of the Italian Baroque. She was the first female artist to paint large scale history and religious pictures, subjects considered off-limits to women at that time, and she specialized in themes with female protagonists. Her depiction of traditional stories of rape and vengeance -- but from the viewpoint of a woman -- marked a breakthrough in the history of art. In fact, a year before the r***, Artemisia produced an important early painting, Susanna and the Elders of 1610, whose unusual treatment of this biblical theme has been recognized as a subtextual protest againtst the sexual exploitation of women. The Judith and Holofernes painted shortly after the r*** -- which is used in the film as an erotic tableau vivant -- has been interpreted by art historian Mary Garrard as a metaphoric expression of female resistance to masculine sexual dominance.

Artemisia Gentileschi was born on July 8, 1593 in Rome. During this period of history, the norm was that women who became painters were those whose fathers were ... painters. Artemisia followed this trend, her father, Orazio Gentileschi was also a painter. One of the defining points in Artemisia's early life occurred in 1612. Orazio brought a lawsuit against Artemisias teacher, Tassi. The suit, which still remains a little ambiguous, was either for a breach of contract or for rape.
