Arsenic can be removed from water in various ways. Examples of water purification techniques that may be applied are iron and aluminum coagulation, activated alumina adsorption, ion exchange and membrane filtration. AS-V can be removed easier than AS-III. AS-III can be removed when it is pre-oxidised to AS-V.

Arsenic poisoning from drinking water remains a very serious world health issue. Internationally, in West Bengal, India and Bangladesh more than 75 million people are exposed to arsenic-laden drinking water that threatens their health. Of those 75 million, it is estimated that 200,000 to 270,000 people will die from cancer each year (Gilbert, 2004.

Arsenic occurs naturally in groundwater and is found in rocks, vegetables and the human body. It can enter drinking water supplies in communities where groundwater makes up a large part of the total water supply, like Tucson. Some people who drink water over many years could experience skin damage or problems with their circulatory system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

Drinking water mainly contains inorganic arsenic (arsenide or arsenate), therefore determining the total arsenic concentration suffices. Distinguishing between different types of arsenic is irrelevant.

Arsenic’s low-level presence in the environment and routine arsenic releases discussed here are too low to cause significant health effects. EPA acknowledges that low levels of arsenic will be present in soil, food, water, and air regardless of whether it is produced by human activities. Interestingly, very small amounts of arsenic in people’s diets may actually improve health.
