Arsenic: Poisons
built 653 days ago
Arsenic exposure, even at low levels, can result in a range of symptoms. Swallowing or inhaling low levels of inorganic arsenic can result in stomach ache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It can ... result in decreased production of red and white blood cells which may cause fatigue, abnormal heart rhythm, blood-vessel damage resulting in bruising, and impaired nerve function. One of the early warning signs of arsenic poisoning is a "pins and needles" sensation in hands and feet.
Arsenic has been used in agricultural insecticides and military poison gases as lewisite and adamsite. It has been increasingly used as a doping agent in solid state devices, such as transistors. Gallium arsenide is used as a laser material that changes electricity directly into light.

Arsenic has been known and used in Persia and elsewhere since ancient times. The symptoms of arsenic poisoning were not defined, hence it was frequently used for murder until the advent of the Marsh test, a sensitive chemical test for its presence.
