Arnold Schwarzenegger: Republican Party
built 648 days ago
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, an immigrant, Tuesday night addressed the Republican National Convention where he spoke of the greatness of America. Schwarzenegger, born in Austria, is a former actor and body builder. Here is a transcript of his remarks:
Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born on July 30, 1947 in Thal, a small Austrian town near the Slovenian border. He had one older brother, Meinhard. His father, Gustav, had an authoritarian background. He voluntarily joined the National Socialist German Workers Party in 1938, and became a member of the SA in 1939. Although he served in an Austrian military police unit on the Eastern Front during World War II, there is no suggestion he was involved in any kind of war crimes. He joined the Austrian police following the war, raising his children strictly.

Arnold Schwarzenegger In 1985, Schwarzenegger appeared in Stop the Madness, an anti-drug music video sponsored by the Reagan administration. He first came to wide public notice as a Republican during the 1988 Presidential election, accompanying then-Vice President George H.W. Bush at a campaign rally. Attacking Bush's Democratic opponents, he said to the crowd: "They all look like a bunch of girlie men, right?"[2]
Schwarzenegger has been a registered Republican for many years. As an actor, his political views were always well-known as they contrasted with those of many other prominent Hollywood stars, who are generally considered to be a liberal and Democratic-leaning community. At the 2004 Republican National Convention, Schwarzenegger gave a speech and explained why he was a Republican:[39]
Arnold is running as a moderate but he withdrew 4 of his own nominees to the CalSTRS board after they voted against his plan to privatize teachers pension plans. One of the appointees, Republican Jim Grey, said, "If you have to be in lock step, I guess I shouldn’t be one of his appointees." [3]

Schwarzenegger then bucked the advice of fellow Republican strategists and appointed a Democrat, Susan Kennedy, as his Chief of Staff. Schwarzenegger scrambled toward the political middle, determined to build a winning legacy with only a short time to go until the next gubernatorial election.
