Schwarzenegger's uniquely muscular appearance earned him several movie roles. His first credited film appearance was in Hercules in New York (1970). Under the name Arnold Strong, Schwarzenegger played the title character who travels to New York and befriends a mild-mannered man. His accent in the film was so thick that his lines were dubbedbed. Schwarzenegger came to the attention of more people in the documentary Pumping Iron (1977).

The irony of Gov. Schwarzenegger's proposal to publicly fund health insurance for an estimated 6.5 million residents who lack basic coverage is that illegal immigration has been one of the key factors in creating millions of uninsured Californians. A large percentage of U.S. citizen children without coverage are the offspring of illegal immigrants. Moreover, the presence of millions of low-wage illegal aliens in the California labor force has led to many employers dropping coverage that they used to provide to workers and their families.

Throughout the early to mid 1970s, he took on a handful of various roles, mostly on television shows. Ironically, the documentary Pumping Iron (1977) was the catalyst for Schwarzenegger's subsequent acting career.
