For a policeman's son born in a tiny village near Graz, Austria, Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger has done pretty well for himself. On August 6, 2003 he announced his candidacy in California's recall election on NBC's Jay Leno Show. On the night of October 7 the Austrian-American actor made his victory speech in Los Angeles, introduced by Jay Leno. Although Gray Davis had made fun of Arnold's Austrian accent during the race, Schwarzenegger managed to turn the contest into a two-man race between him and Davis, and to prove that the political scene in California is a horse of a different color (zu Deutsch: Da pfeifft es aus einem anderen Loch).

Schwarzenegger has ... killed several proposed state environmental measures. One would have assessed a "$30 fee on each container that moves through the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports, with the money devoted partly to cutting air pollution." Another "would have made it state policy to take every step necessary to reduce dependence on oil. And he vetoed a measure that would have required that half of all cars sold in California by 2020 be capable of using alternative fuels." In addition, Schwarzenegger "has taken more than $1 million in campaign money from the oil industry," reported the Los Angeles Times in April 2007. [5]

They have the, you know, part of the black blood in them and part of the Latino blood in them that together makes it." Source: Robert Salladay. | The lesson of the defeat in California of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's referendum revolution is this: The American people will not forever be fooled. The negative message of the Republican right has lost its power to terrorize voters.
