Since he entered politics, Schwarzenegger has had this tension with environmental advocates, who mocked him during his 2003 campaign for driving gas-guzzling Hummers while pledging to clean up the environment. After his election, and at great expense, he converted some of his vehicles to run on biodiesel and hydrogen. He joked about the criticism in his speech.
