Wallace (Dennis Quaid) and Wilder Foudroyant (Arliss Howard) are brothers and pyrokinetics. Ever since a childhood tragedy where they accidentally killed a bum sleeping in a friend's "secret clubhouse," they've kept their firestarting abilities a secret. Now that they're grown up and estranged, Wallace (performing as Biff the Clown in a traveling carnival) wants to debut his talents on The David Letterman Show. Wilder has a dull job in a minuscule Kwik Foto booth at a dying mall and is a volunteer fireman.

At the beginning of Big Bad Love, actor Arliss Howard’s adaptation of Mississippi writer Larry Brown’s story "92 Days," Leon (Howard), a down-and-out unpublished Mississippi writer, appears to be having sex in a bathtub with a woman in a wedding dress. Turns out he’s having sex with himself — which is an apt metaphor for the creative imagination, and for this earnest, overwrought, fitfully brilliant attempt to capture that process.

Arliss Howard (FULL METAL JACKET) stars as Nick Dunbar, a tough cop who goes undercover in a local high school to prove the innocence of his younger brother (Loren Dean), who has been accused of murdering a teacher. Nick soon finds himself face-to-face with a power-crazy principal (Robert Stack), a school bully, quirky teachers, and all the other things that made him hate high school the first time around. However, as Nick tries desperately to solve the crime, he becomes increasingly involved in his newly adopted 1980s punk persona, reveling in the youthful experience, and falling in love with a pretty English teacher (Suzy Amis). A delightful combination of comedy and suspense that features a delirious cast of eccentric characters including George Wendt, Diane Ladd, and Abe Vigoda.

Theres a scene halfway through Big Bad Love where Leon Barlow (Arliss Howard) sitswrapped in a bedsheeton his farmhouses front porch sipping a cup of coffee as the sun dawns on a new day. Seems idyllic doesnt it? It is if you havent seen the first hour of the film. Leon is an unemployed, unpublished writer, and hes just capped off a rip-roaring weekend bender. So, whats great about this porch scene? Nothing, actually.

American actor Arliss Howard was born in Missouri, but he became well known to moviegoers of 1987 as a Texan named Cowboy in Stanley Kubrick's Vietnam picture Full Metal Jacket. Many viewers assumed that this tall, lithe actor made his film debut in the Kubrick picture, but Howard had in fact been showing up in hick roles for several years, notably as the naive vacuum cleaner salesman in Door To Door (84).

In Wilder Napalm, the brothers are Wallace (Dennis Quaid) and Wilder (Arliss Howard), the talent is starting fires through mental means, and their relationship is a shambles. So when these guys compete, uncork the nearest hydrant, call 911 and run for cover, because things get hot pretty quick. Writer Vince Gilligan throws Stephen King's Firestarter on its ear, adding a kooky love triangle, sibling rivalry, suppressed memories and offbeat humor to create one of Hollywood's quirkiest comedies.
