Arlington, VA- /PRNewswire/ - Yesterday, Arlington-based Space Adventures announced that they would launch the world's second private space explorer to the International Space Station (ISS). According to PR Newswire, Mark Shuttleworth, an Internet entrepreneur from South Africa, today became only the second privately funded person in the world to travel to the space station. Shuttleworth will be accompanied by two crewmates, Russian commander Yuri Gidzenko and Italian astronaut Roberto Vittori. The entire crew will take off on a Russian Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, at 2:26 a.m. EDT, and is scheduled to spend 10 days in space.

Arlington's executive branch consists of an elected five-member Board of Selectmen. The day-to-day operations are handled by a Town Manager hired by the Board of Selectmen. The legislative branch is made up of 252 Town Meeting Members, elected from the 21 precincts. The Town of Arlington technically has enough citizens to become the City of Arlington, but has not done so, in part because it would lose its ability to hold Town Meetings. These meetings can often last for at least a month, being held two nights a week until the issues are settled.
