Despite the romantic lure of the Pampas and of vast, arid Patagonian landscapes, Argentina is a largely urban country. Buenos Aires, the national capital, has sprawled across the eastern Pampas with its ring of modern, bustling suburbs. It is among South America's most cosmopolitan and crowded cities and is often likened to Paris or Rome for its architectural styles and lively nightlife. Its industries have drawn colonists from Italy, Spain, and numerous other countries, millions of whom immigrated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Greater Buenos Aires is home to about one-third of the Argentine people. Among the country's other major cities are Mar del Plata, La Plata, and Bahía Blanca on the Atlantic coast and Rosario, San Miguel de Tucumán, Córdoba, and Neuquén in the interior.

Argentina is one of the biggest countries in the world and as a consequence, its geography is as diverse as you could wish. Travellers will find different sorts of landscapes and geographical zones, from north to south as well as from east to west. In the west for example the Andes mountain chain run for the entire length of the country. The higher parts are in the north and centre, with the Aconcagua being the highest point at 6959 meters, and elevations in the south are more in the 2500 to 4000 meter range. Argentina has 4,665 km (2,899 mi) of coastline.[22] The continental platform is unusually wide; in Argentina this shallow area of the Atlantic Ocean is called Mar Argentino. The waters are rich in fisheries and suspected of holding important hydrocarbon energy resources. Argentina's coastline varies between areas of sand dunes and cliffs. The two major ocean currents affecting the coast are the warm Brazil Current and the cold Falkland Current (Spanish: corriente antártica or corriente de las Malvinas). Because of the uneveness of the coastal landmass, the two currents alternate in their influence on climate and do not allow temperatures to fall evenly with higher latitude. The southern coast of Tierra del Fuego forms the north shore of the Drake Passage.

Argentina has a relatively complex policy on land protection. There are 190 protected sites, covering a total of 4.4 percent of the country, with a mixture of federal, provincial, and municipal administration. Universities and private individuals ... administer a few reserves. Only 1.7 percent (1997) of the land receives significant protection, and only about half of the recognized ecotypes in Argentina are represented in the protected land system. Major ecological threats are hunting and logging in the north, excessive tourism in the south, overgrazing in virtually all areas, and salinization (contamination with salt) of grazing and croplands as a consequence of damming and irrigation projects.

The majority of Argentina is either low-lying land or midrange mountains, like most of the Pampas and Patagonia. The Pampas are mostly in the northern and central parts where most of the bigger cities, like Buenos Aires and Córdoba, are located. South of the Pampas, crossing the Rio Colorado, you will enter Patagonia, although sometimes Patagonia is ... considered that part south of the 40 degrees south line, and therefore also parts of Chile are considered Patagonia. This means that although the stereotypical view many people have of Patagonia is as a flat and cold area, the lower areas of the Andes are also part of Patagonia. In the deep south is Tierra del Fuego, with the most southern city in the world Ushuaia, where boats to Antarctica leave, part of which is Argentinian as well.

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- TAM and the LAN alliance -- LAN Airlines, LAN Peru, LAN Argentina and LAN Ecuador -- will commence a code-share flight agreement on November 5, beginning with LAN Airlines (Chile).
