Area 51: Groom Lake
built 207 days ago
Captives of Area 51? The real legend of Area 51 — that the base is used to house and reverse-engineer crashed flying saucers — is actually a relatively recent creation. It began around 1989, when a guy named Bob Lazar told a Las Vegas television program that he had worked at Groom Lake and had seen the flying saucers with his own eyes.

This picture shows the 6km runway at Area 51 - the longest runway in the World! Everyone has a theory to what the US military are keeping under wraps at Area 51, but few can claim to have gained first hand knowledge from the inside. One such person is Edgar Fouche, who, during his 25 years of service with the US Air Force and Department Of Defence, was stationed at top-secret sites such as Groom Lake Air Base, the Nellis Test Range and the Nevada Test Site.Fouche has worked in areas such as intelligence, electronics and communications as well as a whole range of other black projects.
What's In A Name?Area 51 is known by many names. Kelly Johnson, who was responsible for the facility's construction, named it Paradise Ranch (he was being sarcastic). Other names for the base include The Ranch, Watertown Strip, The Box, Red Square, The Farm, Groom Lake, Dreamland and the romantic name Air Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3.
Pic: The Area 51 road The Area 51 access road is around mile marker 32 on NV 375. You really can't miss it. It is the wide dirt road going off toward a distant ridge. Known as the Groom Lake road, it is in the middle of nowhere and just begs to be driven down.
Mike Looks at Area 51 Contrary to popular opinion, the U.S. Government does publish satellite photos that show the Air Force test facility at Groom Lake, commonly known as Area 51. This 1100 by 1200 pixel image is composed of 6 photographs taken by a Landsat Thematic Mapping satellite on August 18, 1993. The originals were posted on a military Web server at Fort Irwin, CA. They were available until just recently, but it seems the Army finally realized that they were showing images of a base that the Air Force was trying to keep secret. It was fun while it lasted.
Pic: Old satellite photo Nearby Rachel, Nevada is ... a must see for people visiting Area 51. The Area 51 Research Center, which publishes the Groom Lake Desert Rat magazine, and the Little A'le'inn, with its cool alien logo, are here. The Little A'le'inn restaurant and motel is like an oasis in the desert for UFO enthusiasts. You can eat, drink, buy alien souvenirs and, since this is Nevada, play video poker. Click here for an interview with Pat Travis, owner of the Little A'le'inn.
