Archimedes is known as one of the three greatest mathematicians of all time, along with Newton and Gauss. He was known by many as "the wise one." Others referred to him as "the master." However, he was most well known as "the great geometer."

An accurate likeness of Archimedes is not known. The bust shown here (and preserved in a Neapolitan museum), believed by many to have been Archimedes, is actually Archidamos II of Sparta, who died in 338 BC. It is... no more fanciful an image of Archimedes than many artistic representations created over the centuries, and has found its way onto coins, postal stamps and other places.

A test of the "Archimedes death ray" was carried out in 1973 by the Greek scientist Ioannis Sakkas. The experiment took place at the Skaramagas naval base outside Athens.
