The Arabian Sea is bordered by Yemen, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Pakistan, and India. It merges with the Gulf of Oman to the northwest, which flows through the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf, and the Gulf of Aden in the southwest.

SUPARCO’s ‘Hazards Monitoring’ group has been studying Arabian Sea cyclones with satellite data / imageries since 1989. In this presentation, cyclone formation in the Arabian Sea, its development and possibility of predicting its course will be discussed. Statistical analysis of 60-years (since 1945) Arabian Sea cyclone data, including those traveling northward towards Pakistan has been worked out. Case study of the Thatta cyclone of May 1999 will be presented. The recurving phenomena and other characteristics for determining cyclone danger for Pakistan will be discussed. Coastal zones of Pakistan vulnerable to cyclone damages and mitigation measures that can be taken up will be presented.

After the Suez Canal opened in 1870, the Arabian Sea experienced another rush of commerce. Since then traffic on the sea has expanded so rapidly that some ports can no longer handle the deeply laden vessels. New shipping lines have been formed to meet the needs, and merchants predict new ports will open to them.

The Arabian Seaports has handled a total tonnage of all the sea ports together during the first half of 2007. Its total has listed around 67.3 Million Tonnes. The rate of increase in the tonnage is about 4.60% at the same period that was listed in the previous year. The rate of Imports went up by about 10.03% while the rate of export was near about 1%.
