Arabian Sea

The Arabian Sea is a center for oil shipping. Oil and other pollution, as well as damage from boat anchors, harm habitats. Mining causes chemical contamination. Sewage and fertilizers cause algae to grow and then decay, which depletes the oxygen that animals need to breathe. Destructive fishing practices and overfishing ... threaten the ecoregion, along with tourism.

The Arabian Sea is a center for oil shipping. As a result oil spills, anchor damage, sedimentation, and other pollution effects are a real threat. Mining operations, fishing pressures, destructive fish collecting practices (e.g., dynamiting), residential and commercial development, and effluent discharge have resulted in altered species composition in many areas. Recreation and tourism ... contribute to eutrophication and reef degradation. War-related activities provide another source of environmental damage.

The disputed maritime boundary between India and Pakistan in the Sir Creek estuary in the Arabian Sea has caused particular problems for fishermen. Hundreds of them are arrested each year for inadvertently straying into the other's territorial waters. They are jailed for months, and usually released when the two countries agree on a prisoner swap. But a new hotline linking their coastal security agencies has helped reduce these inadvertent crossings. India's coast guard chief, Vice-Admiral Rusi F. Contractor, said "Fishing vessels found straying within five nautical miles of the maritime boundary are normally returned if nothing incriminating is found on them." See "Pakistan hotline prevents fishermen crossing," Reuters at Scotsman.com, 1/31/07.

The Arabian Sea has a gently sloping bottom, with broad shelves along the west coast of India, but narrow ones elsewhere. With wide-open connection to the rest of the Indian Ocean, the tides are predominantly co-oscillating. Figure 8 shows the tide gage locations around the basin and the bottom topography. The model results are depicted for the M2 (Fig 11), S2 (Fig 13), K1 (Fig 14), and O1 (Fig 16) tides. Figure 9 shows the tide chart made from model results for the M2 tide without any data assimilation. A scatter plot (Fig 10) for these results is shown.

A cruise on the sunken waters of the Arabian Sea will surely add colours to your memory canvas. Although now coming of age, tourists can choose from a wide array of voyage options stringed by a strategic, customer friendly, personal and professional service that enthralls every visitor. Most of these luxury ships sail from the golden coasts of Mumbai to the emerald islands of Lakshadweep, and return via the rocking waves of Goa, making stops at both the places. You are altogether fetched to a dreamworld when the 'Brobdingnagian' (huge) ships set out from the jetty, lit by softened lights as the sun slips into the womb of horizon. The calm harbour waters shimmer in gorgeous blues, as ferries and fishing boats create a constantly changing canvas before the eyes.

Life aboard the USS John C. Stennis, an aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea that's supporting bombing missions over Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Only a few dozen people on board actually fly F-18s and F-14s. It takes the rest of the crew — over 5,000 people — to keep them in the air. One person stocks vending machines, twelve hours a day. Hundreds prepare food and do laundry. There are several different garage bands, each with its own following.
