Arabian Peninsula: Saudi Arabia
built 628 days ago
Al-Qaeda Organization in the Arabian Peninsula leader Abdulaziz Al-Muqrin issued calls for the Saudi royal family to be overthrown. Conquering Saudi Arabia would be the first step towards establishing a Caliphate that would liberate the third holy place [Jerusalem] and unite all the Muslims of the world. The nightmare scenario for the West in one in which Saudi oil production (10% of world output) is taken out by terrorist attacks or by regime change. The Saudi ruling family is stuck between two contradictory policies: appeasement of puritanical Islam and alliance with America.

The Arabian Peninsula lies at the very heart of the 10/40 Window. No region of the world has been so resistant to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Peninsula is the core of Islam. The two holiest cities in the Islamic world - Mecca and Medina - are in Saudi Arabia, the largest nation on the Peninsula.

Khaled Ali Ali Haj, al Qaeda's chief of operations in the Arabian peninsula, had been wanted by Saudi authorities since May 2003, when his name was published days before that month's triple suicide bombings in Riyadh. Haj, a Yemeni, was once a bodyguard of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and he had been on "missions" in Afghanistan, Europe and southeast Asia. Analysts described him as al Qaeda's chief of operations in the Arabian peninsula.

This ecoregion covers much of the western and eastern coasts of the Arabian Peninsula. In Oman, it starts close to the Bar al Hikman, opposite Masirah island, and extends southwards. It reaches up to 120 kilometers (km) inland over the stony plateau of the Jiddat al Harasis, home to the re-introduced Oryx leucoryx and other wildlife of the White Oryx Sanctuary. Continuing southwards it covers the escarpment mountains of Dhofar, consisting of three ranges that together form a chain 290 km in length: Jebel Qamar in the west; Jebel Qara in the centre; and Jebel Samhan in the east. Thereafter, across the border into Yemen, the region runs along more steep escarpments, followed by coastal plain as far as Aden and beyond. It then turns north to follow the Tihamah coastal plain to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

Yemen is by far the poorest country in the Arabian Peninsula. Many Yemenis depend heavily on money earned by relatives working in other countries. During the Gulf War, those Yemenis working in Saudi Arabia were expelled, bringing an economic crisis. Today Yemen continues to struggle with poverty and under-development. Most Yemenis live on farms or in small villages. Illiteracy is among the barriers to the full penetration of the Gospel into Yemen.
