The Arab League helped rouse nationalist ambitions and revolts among the Muslims of the French North African territories. France was unable to overcome the uprisings in Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria. It recognized the independence of Morocco and Tunisia in 1956.

Although the UN, the Arab League, the African Union and the international community support the unification of Somalia, Mohamed said, those groups have had only low-level representation at the peace conference to date. With full-time efforts in Washington, Mohamed hopes to change that.

Human Rights Watch called on the Arab League to firmly condemn the atrocities in Darfur, and take serious steps to support efforts by the United Nations and African Union to stabilize the situation. The pan-Arab group should call for an international commission of inquiry into the crimes in Darfur, and make public the report of its May fact-finding mission to Darfur.
