Arab intelligence officials in two countries, who spoke on condition they not be identified further, both expected the Americans to attack Iraq as early as mid-November. And some Arab officials privately say they would like Washington to move soon. "It must be quick, it must be strong and it must be decisive," as one Arab minister put it.

Arab American’s classification as ‘white’ has led to serious problems in undercounting the community. The question of Arab classification has been a difficult one for the U.S. Census to answer, ever since Arabs immigrating to the U.S. were classified as “Ottoman” or “Turkish.” As a result, Arab American activists say, the community has been consistently undercounted.

At least 3.5 million* Americans are of Arab descent. Arab Americans live in all 50 states, but two thirds reside in 10 states; one third of the total live in California, New York, and Michigan. About 94% live in metropolitan areas. Los Angeles, Detroit, New York/NJ, Chicago and Washington, D.C., are the top five metro areas of Arab American concentration.

The high-profile event brings together 2,700 national, state and local business, professional, academic and political leaders to build awareness of ACCESS' role in providing human services to Arab Americans and many others in Metropolitan Detroit. The annual dinner is the largest Arab American event in the country and the second largest sit-down dinner in Michigan. This year's banquet will feature Dearborn's Maple School Drumming Ensemble, a group of Arab American 8- to 11-year olds who play the traditional Arabic drum, the "derbeke," Arab American comedian Ahmed Ahmed and afterglow entertainment by Ali Barada and his band.

Others would like Arab Americans to be separated into their own category, the same way that Hispanics, Blacks and Asians have been. This argument stems from the belief that Arabs are officially classified as White, yet in reality and practice, are treated as a minority.

Lebanese Americans constitute a greater part of the total number of Arab Americans residing in most states, except New Jersey, where Egyptian Americans are the largest Arab group. Americans of Syrian decent make up the majority of Arab Americans in Rhode Island, while the largest Palestinian population is in Illinois, and the Iraqi and Assyrian/Chaldean communities are concentrated in Illinois, Michigan, and California.
