Newton The Apple Newton is an early line of personal digital assistants developed, manufactured and marketed by Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) from 1993 to 1998. The original “MessagePad” Newtons featured handwriting recognition. The term “Newton” was Apple’s name for the operating system it used, but popular usage of the word Newton has grown to include the device and its software together.
Newton screen displaying a Note with text, "ink text", a sketch, & vectorized shapes Although the Apple Newton was produced for six years, it was never as successful in the marketplace as Apple had hoped. This has been attributed to two primary reasons: the Newton's high price (which went up to $1000 when models 2000 and 2100 were introduced), and its large size (it failed the "pocket test" by not fitting in an average coat, shirt, or trouser pocket).
The Apple Newton family of handheld computers kicked off the handheld revolution -- sadly for Apple, the Newton came to the market a few years too soon. The Newton's capabilities were amazing for 1993 -- the devices are still competetive with the PDAs sold today. The first Newton Messagepads released had one flaw: the handwriting recognition was not accurate enough to make the device usable. This flaw was eventually fixed, but the original bad press stunted adoption of the device. Apple discontinued the Newton series of PDAs in 1998, during the streamlining of their product lines.
The Apple Newton MessagePad 100 The Apple Newton, or simply Newton, is an early line of personal digital assistants developed and marketed by Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) from 1993 to 1998. Some electronic engineering and the manufacture of the Newton was done in Japan by Sharp. The original Newtons were based on the ARM 610 RISC processor and featured handwriting recognition software. Apple's official name for the device was "MessagePad"; the term "Newton" was Apple's name for the operating system it used (Newton OS), but popular usage of the word Newton has grown to include the device and its software together. The name is an allusion to Isaac Newton's apple.
The Newton was an early personal digital assistant (PDA) developed by Apple Computer and sold from 1993 to 1998. It was based on the ARM processor, and featured handwriting recognition. Officially the term refers to the operating system that ran the Apple MessagePad along with similar products from Radio Shack and other manufacturers.
