Throughout the mid to late 1990s, Apple tried to improve its operating system's multitasking and memory management. After multiple failed attempts to improve the existing Mac OS, first with the Taligent project, then later with Copland and Gershwin, the company chose to purchase NeXT and its NeXTSTEP operating system, bringing Steve Jobs back to Apple in the process.[28] On July 9, 1997, Gil Amelio was ousted as CEO of Apple by the board of directors after overseeing a 3-year record-low stock price and crippling financial losses. Jobs stepped in as the interim CEO and began a restructuring of the company's product line.

Unlike Apple, which built Mac OS X on open-source (and therefore easily examined and understood) code, Microsoft keeps the code for Windows secret even from most of Microsoft's own engineers. A macabre joke made the rounds at Microsoft after the Windows code was stolen by hackers -- they literally broke into the company's most secure network and stole it away -- that said only six people know how Windows actually works, and three of them are hiding in Bulgaria. Bear in mind that Microsoft is not simply refusing to tell others how Windows works; it is refusing to tell others how Microsoft Word works, how Excel works, how Access works. Likely competitors can't make compatible software unless they literally guess at it, and there is no guarantee that even the smartest software experts will guess right.

The company introduced the Apple II microcomputer in March 1977. A few years later, in 1983, it introduced the Lisa, the first commercial personal computer to employ a graphical user interface (GUI), which was influenced in part by the Xerox Alto. Apple's software could turn the Mac into a phenomenon again, perhaps even in corporations. Apple is arguably the best software company on the planet, regularly releasing basic operating system software and application programs that reveal the greater potential of computers as devices for communication, creativity and entertainment. Most of Apple's software gets an overhaul every few years and is constantly freshened with free, easy, online upgrades that improve performance.
