You will be admitted to hospital if appendicitis is suspected. An operation to remove the inflamed appendix is usually done quite quickly once the diagnosis is made. It is much better to remove an inflamed appendix before it bursts. The inflamed appendix is found and cut off the caecum. The 'hole' left in the caecum is stitched up to stop any contents from the gut leaking out.

One hundred twenty-seven patients had a final diagnosis of acute appendicitis. CT was performed in 198 patients (64%). The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of CT scans were 91, 92, and 91 per cent, respectively. Surgical management plans were altered in 54 patients after obtaining the CT results; unnecessary delay in surgical treatment or unnecessary operations were prevented in 28 and 26 patients, respectively. In addition CT detected unrelated pathologies in 23 patients.

Nashville, TN – As reported last night (May 18) Johnny Van Zant, lead singer for southern rock’s most famous touring band Lynyrd Skynyrd, underwent an emergency operation for appendicitis. The surgery was successful.
