Appendicitis: Doctors
built 614 days ago
David's appendicitis happened suddenly, when he awoke at 1:00 am with a terrible bellyache. He blamed it on the chips and ice cream he had eaten after dinner and tried to go back to sleep. By 7:00 am, his bellyache was worse, he was not hungry, and he felt very hot. He told his parents about the intense pain in his right side, and they took him to see the doctor immediately. A series of events followed rapidly.

If the doctor decides that a kid has appendicitis, the appendix will need to be removed in an operation. To prepare for an appendectomy (the name for surgery that removes the appendix), a kid will be given anesthesia. This puts him or her into a kind of deep sleep and keeps the kid from feeling pain during the surgery.

Many people who have had appendicitis say the pain is hard to describe. It may not feel like any pain you have had before. It may not even be a very bad pain, but you may feel like something is wrong. If you have moderate belly pain that does not go away after 4 hours, call your doctor. If you have severe belly pain, call your doctor right away.

If you have symptoms of appendicitis, it is important that that you do not take laxatives or enemas to relieve constipation. These medications could cause your appendix to burst. You should ... avoid taking pain medications that could mask the symptoms the doctor would need to know about to diagnose the condition.

Because the appendix is more likely to perforate in children than adults, parents should not hesitate to call the doctor if their child develops symptoms that may indicate appendicitis. Parents should feel free to ask their doctor and other medical staff questions about any medical tests or treatments their child receives.

Sometimes a doctor will recommend surgery even if he or she is not sure you have appendicitis. Surgery can eliminate the chances of a ruptured appendix. If you have surgery and your appendix is normal, your appendix will still be removed so that it will not cause future problems.
