Appendicitis: Children
built 642 days ago
Preoperative antibiotics are given to children with suspected appendicitis and stopped after surgery if there is no perforation. Antibiotic treatment kills bacteria, and stronger and longer courses of antibiotics are required if peritonitis occurs.
Source:
Children with appendicitis usually stay in the hospital 2 days after the operation. Children are discharged when they are able to drink, are comfortable on pain medication by mouth, and do not have a fever.
For Patients & Families Most cases of appendicitis occur between the ages of six and 20 years. It is uncommon in children under four years, but the rate of perforation is high in this group since young children are unable to tell exactly how they feel and "where it hurts."
