Appendicitis: Cases
built 614 days ago
Appendicitis mostly affects kids between the ages of 11 and 20. Most cases of appendicitis occur between October and May. A family history of appendicitis may increase a child's risk for the illness, especially in males.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the disease is most common among teens and young adults, males more often than females, and Latinos more than other groups, although no one knows why.
An acutely inflamed and enlarged appendix, sliced lengthwise On the basis of experimental evidence, acute appendicitis seems to be the end result of a primary obstruction of the appendix lumen[3][4]. Once this obstruction occurs the appendix subsequently becomes filled with mucus and distends, increasing intraluminal and intramural pressures, resulting in thrombosis and occlusion of the small vessels, and stasis of lymphatic flow. As these progress, the appendix becomes ischemic and then necrotic. Rarely, spontaneous recovery can occur at this point. As bacteria begin to leak out through the dying walls, pus forms within and around the appendix (suppuration). The end result of this cascade is appendiceal rupture causing peritonitis, which may lead to septicemia and eventually death.
[A]ppendicitis is now considered by some to behave as two distinct disease processes, typical and atypical (or suppurative). Approximately two-thirds of patients with appendicitis have typical histories, and findings suggest a virus or mild obstruction as a cause. In the third with atypical histories, an early suppurative process begins at the clinical onset, and severe unremitting obstruction is the likely cause. In any case, early surgical removal is the best treatment for either type of appendicitis.

Most affected by appendicitis are young people between the ages of 11 and 20. And, most cases of appendicitis occur in the winter months - between October and May. Having a family history of appendicitis may increase a child's risk for the illness, especially in males, and having cystic fibrosis ... seems to put a child at higher risk.

In the past, appendicitis sometimes was so severe that the cecum appeared necrotic. Today, this finding is very rare, fortunately. In such cases, perform an ileocecectomy or right hemicolectomy with a primary anastomosis.
