Apocrypha: Jewish Canon
built 792 days ago
When a writing project brought Tim Stafford face-to-face with the Apocrypha, he got a chance to expand his knowledge of Jewish history, Jesus’ world, and the difficulties of keeping faith in a hostile culture. This study explores the origins and history of the Apocrypha, then asks what Christians can learn from first-century Jews.
The biblical apocrypha are sometimes referred to as the Apocrypha. Although the term apocrypha simply means hidden, this usage is sometimes considered pejorative by those who consider such works to be canonical parts of their scripture.
Since the nineteenth century, increased understanding of intertestamental Judaism and Hellenistic culture has shown the Apocrypha to be historically important and religiously valuable. These writings display a belief in resurrection, eternal life, and eschatological teachings concerning the last days. The Fall of Adam (see Adam: Ancient Sources), sin, the Jewish Law, and the need for righteousness are topics ... found in the Apocrypha.
