The tale Apocalyptica attempts to weave is an epic one. The story's beginning charts the rise of Satan on Earth and the war he wages on humanity, with only the Faithful managing to escape the ravaged planet on huge interstellar arks [Noah way! -Ed]. Angels then fought with Satan and his forces until he was finally beaten, but hope was lost for the humans that had remained on Earth. For centuries the remnants of the human race in the Faithful colonised new worlds and multiplied, until the inevitable in-fighting and civil wars broke out.

Fans who remember Apocalyptica from its first two albums might have suspected that the four Finnish cellists would fade into obscurity after their stock of Metallica covers ran dry. Sure, the shtick worked well while it lasted, but the irony of classically trained cellists covering heavy metal will only hold listeners' attention for so long. Apocalyptica primarily consists of you controlling a character through a series of missions as part of a group of up to four characters. The controls are spread between the keyboard and the mouse in the traditional first person shooter manner. The difference here being that the melee attacks are handled by repeatedly bashing the right mouse button. Some odd combinations can be performed by timing your mouse clicks. Sadly this is all rather random as you normally wade into battle by running into them and right clicking randomly or trying to aim your gun at them while they try and take your head off. Predictably this doesn�t really work and you spend most of your time dying.

In 1996, Apocalyptica released their debut studio album, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos, which consisted solely of Metallica covers played on cellos. In 1998, Apocalyptica released their second studio album, Inquisition Symphony, which was produced by Hiili Hiilesma. Inquisition Symphony once again contained covers of Metallica, but ... contained covers of Faith No More, Sepultura, and Pantera. For this album the band also decided to include three original songs written by Eicca Toppinen.

As previously reported, SLAYER drummer Dave Lombardo will be guesting on "Apocalyptica" on a song called "Betrayal". The track, which is described by APOCALYPTICA's Perttu Kivilaakso as a "really fast, thrash metal-influenced song," will mark the second time Lombardo has played on an APOCALYPTICA CD, having previously performed on "Reflections".
